What is a car chassis? 

"Chassis" is a term that should be used to refer to the load-bearing part of a car's frame. It is the horizontal section of the vehicle that connects other components of the structure together. The chassis is a set of mechanical components that make it possible to transfer power from the drive unit to the wheels. Ladder frame chassis

This solution can be encountered less and less often due to its considerable weight, among other reasons. The biggest advantages of this type of chassis are the wide possibilities of modification, cost-effective production and relatively simple manufacture. 

Backbone chassis 

In this case, the chassis is constructed from a cylindrical tube with a rectangular cross-section, which passes through the center of the entire structure, thus connecting the lower and upper suspensions. Such a solution provides a number of advantages related to vehicle stability, so it is readily used for example in off-road vehicles. 

Monocoque chassis 

This type of car chassis is currently the most popular solution in vehicle manufacturing. Its name comes from the specific form, which includes not only the chassis itself, but also the upper part of the vehicle. The result is a compact "cage" with all the most important elements of the car's structure. Such a chassis provides a higher level of safety than other solutions, as well as relatively easy repair and very good torsional rigidity. 

Tubular chassis 

This solution is found primarily in racing cars due to its high level of safety in the event of an accident. The design of the tubular chassis resembles a ladder frame chassis, but in this case the elements supporting the body of the vehicle hold not only its chassis, but also other parts. This makes the whole construction much stronger and more stable. However, it also involves much higher production requirements, which also leads to a considerable cost – for this reason, it is difficult to encounter such a chassis in ordinary passenger cars. 

What is the difference between a chassis and a car platform? 

A platform is another term you may encounter in the context of the lower part of a vehicle. However, it is a much more ambiguous term than frame or chassis. When talking about a car platform, it is difficult to point to a specific part of the car, since it is a whole set of common structural, design and manufacturing features shared between different brands and models. 

Car platforms are developed primarily to reduce manufacturing costs. By standardizing certain features of a vehicle, expenses can be minimized, as well as the time it takes to release a finished product onto the market. A platform includes many components, only one of which is the chassis. In addition to it, car components such as the frame, suspension, drive unit, exhaust system or transmission can be standardized. Each manufacturer adapts its car design to these elements, if necessary, making appropriate adjustments to components that allow for it.

Clutch

When the pressure plate presses against the flywheel, the clutch lining will be pinched and the engine speed will be connected to the transmission. This force will continue to grow as the engine speed increases, so manual clutch operation is not required.

Transmission

Transmission is a car chassis component that functions to manipulate engine output. This section is very useful when the car is in a condition that requires large torque or is in a condition when the car has to put out a high speed.

The car's transmission can help perform these activities by adjusting the ratio of the displacement between the gears. Position 1 has a gear ratio that is large enough so that the transmission output rotation will be smaller than the transmission input. However, position one has a very large torque.

After entering 2nd gear or other gear, the gear ratio will be smaller and this will make the output acceleration rate bigger but the maximum torque will decrease.

The transmission has torque that is inversely related to engine RPM. Same with the clutch, the transmission also has an automatic version. This version can adjust the gear ratio according to the speed of the vehicle so that the driver only needs to focus on driving the car.

Universal Joint

The components that are between the transmission and the rear axle of the car must have an unequal height because the axle is under the suspension while the transmission is on the car body. This makes the car need additional components so that the propeller can function without experiencing interference.

Universal joint is a component in the car chassis whose function is to connect torsional moments from any direction and angle. Usually there are two parts of this which are located behind the transmission and front axle.

Gardan

The axle is a car chassis component whose function is to distinguish the left and right wheel rotations. This must be distinguished so that when the car turns to the left, the distance traveled by the left and right wheels can be adjusted. If not distinguished, then one of the wheels can slip and cause wear.

Rear Axle

This component has the shape of a shaft that will connect the axle with the axle. At the end of the axle, a wheel bearing will be attached to the axle bearing the car body. There are two kinds of axles used in cars, namely rigid axles and independent axles.

In the rigid axle, when one wheel is affected by the suspension effect, the other wheel will be affected. Meanwhile, on the independent axle, there are flexible joints that are attached to both ends of the axle so that the left and right wheels can be freed when one of them is affected by the suspension effect.

Spring

Springs are also part of the suspension system. The function of the spring is to dampen road vibrations and provide softness when the car passes through potholes. Springs are usually made of flexible steel with a threaded design.

This part has good damping power so it is often used in cars for independent suspension systems. There is also a leaf spring model which is a sheet-like flexible steel. This model has better strength than threaded springs, so it is more widely used for cars with heavy weights.

Shock Absorber

Shock absorbers are different from springs. It has no resistance to incoming pressure. However, this component can absorb the shock that arises when the spring is working.

This happens when the car passes through a pothole and the pressure that appears is held by the spring. However, because of the flexible nature of the springs and the vehicle's weight is too heavy, the shocks can be too big. This is where the role of the shock absorber is so that shocks do not occur in the suspension system. The shock absorber will withstand the shock force through the liquid mechanism.

Stabilizer Bar

This one part is only found in the free or independent suspension system. Stabilizer is used so that the left and right wheels are not too far apart in margin. This is because the independent suspension system can produce a large rolling effect because there is one wheel that can not hold.

Stabilizer is useful so that the other wheel can withstand when one wheel experiences shocks. This component is composed of a swing bar and link stabilizer. The swing bar is the shaft that connects the left and right suspension systems. The stabilizer link is, on the other hand, connecting the end of the swing bar with the shock absorber.

Steering System

The steering system is also part of the chassis whose function is to relieve driving style and also control the direction of the front wheels. This system is made as an assistant so that when the driver turns the steering wheel it can be lighter.

There are two kinds of power steering, namely the hydraulic type and the electric type. The hydraulic type will use the hydraulic compressive force obtained from the steering pump so that it can push the steering rack. Braking System

The braking system is a system that serves to reduce the speed of the car significantly.
