How do I choose a table base?

09 Apr.,2024

In the world of interior design, tables often take center stage. Whether it's a stylish coffee table in a chic lounge, a robust dining table in a busy restaurant, or an elegant conference table in a corporate setting, tables are indispensable elements of functionality and aesthetics. However, one crucial aspect to consider when designing or choosing a table is the balance between the table base and the table top. In this blog post, we will discuss how to identify the maximum table top size for a given table base.

1. Understand the Basics

Before getting into specifics, it's important to understand why the balance between a table base and a table top is essential. In essence, the stability, functionality, and appearance of a table depend largely on this balance. A base that's too small may not support a large top, causing the table to be unstable or easily tipped. On the other hand, a base that's too large may look awkward and disproportionate and may limit legroom and movement around the table.

2. Base Shape and Stability

The shape of the table base has a significant impact on the stability of the table. If you have a round base, stability is equal in all directions, making it suitable for round or square tops. However, a base with three feet may be less stable if pressure is applied between the feet. This means the weight distribution on the table top should be carefully considered. Regardless of the base shape, ensure that it provides enough support for the table top while also accounting for any potential uneven weight distribution.

3. Determining Maximum Table Top Size

As a rule of thumb, the size of the base should be roughly one-half to two-thirds the size of the table top. However, this rule may vary depending on several factors:

Material of the Top and Base: The materials of both the table top and the base can influence the maximum size of the table top. Heavier table tops, like those made of solid wood or marble, will require sturdier and wider bases. Conversely, lighter table tops, like those made from glass or thin wood, can be supported by narrower bases.

Shape of the Top: Round table tops generally require a central base, while square or rectangular tops might require one central base or a base at each end. For round table tops, the diameter of the base should be at least half the diameter of the top. For square or rectangular tops, the length of the base(s) should be approximately two-thirds the length of the top.

Height of the Table: The height of the table can also affect the base-to-top ratio. Taller tables, like bar tables, generally require bases with a wider footprint for stability.

4. The Importance of Balance

Aside from the technicalities of stability and safety, achieving a harmonious balance between the table top and the base is crucial for aesthetic reasons. An appropriate base-to-top ratio ensures that your table looks proportionate and pleasing to the eye, enhancing the overall appeal of your space.

5. Getting Professional Advice

While these guidelines provide a good starting point, many factors can influence the ideal base-to-top ratio for a table, including the specific design of the base, the intended use of the table, and the surrounding furniture and decor. Therefore, it can be helpful to seek professional advice when selecting a table base for a specific top size. At CMcadeiras, our team of experts can help you navigate these considerations and select or design a table that is both functional and visually stunning.

Choosing the right table involves more than just picking a design you love; it's also about understanding the balance and proportion between the base and the top. Remember, a well-proportioned and stable table not only serves its purpose effectively but also contributes significantly to the aesthetics of your space. So, next time you're selecting a table, consider the base-to-top ratio and make your choice wisely.

Table Tops and Bases

Choosing a table top and base has never been easier. The first thing to consider is the type of material you want for your tables. Affordable Seating offers a wide range of solid wood, laminate, overlay and many more table top choices. When visualizing your restaurant, generally a solid wood table top would best fit in a fine dining establishment or steakhouse. We have many finishes to choose from such as mahogany, black or cherry. You might find laminate table tops in your everyday family restaurant. Reversible laminate table tops would best fit in high traffic restaurants such as a fast-food establishment. These tables are commercial grade and will help ease your pocket as they can withstand the wear and tear of a fast- paced restaurant.

After you have selected a table top, you will need a table base. We offer round, x-prong, and bolt down table bases. The weight and size of your restaurant tables must be taken into consideration when choosing the right table base. Choosing a large 48” circle table with a 30” round base can weigh up to 130 lbs depending on materials used. You may want to take into consideration flexibility with moving tables around in your restaurant, when choosing certain combinations.

Now that you are able to calculate the table top and base base size to determine the right dimension for your layout, you can decide how many people you want to seat per table. There are no hard and fast rules about dining tables dimensions as they allow some flexibility to squeeze in a few more people as needed. However, there are recommendations you may want to consider. Conversations may be difficult to take place over a circular table larger than a 6" diameter. It's easier to hold conversations with people seated next to you rather than across from you at a big table. Likewise, seating 12 people at around a 6" diameter table is possible so long as the chairs fit but it's also a bit cramped which may create an uncomfortable seating experience for guests. In such scenarios, square and rectangular tables are a better choice. Ultimately, you may want to consider a table size that is flexible to seat as many people as possible without overcrowding them.

All table top shapes can be designed to include leaves, allowing you to expand the table's capacity. When searching for tables that include leaves, you should check to see if there are storage spaces for the leaves on the table and where. Several commercial furniture suppliers can attach leaves to the tables that don't normally include them upon request.

Having another table with the same dimensions as your current table is another way to accommodate more people. By aligning these tables together, you can use your restaurant furniture to seat more people comfortably for social gatherings, events, meals, etc.

30" is the standard height for a dining table but there are minimum and ideal table sizes to ensure a comfortable eating experience for people. For a 10 person minimum and ideal size arrangement at a round or rectangular table , 1 person should occupy at the end of the table. 2 people should be placed at the end of a 12 person minimum and ideal table size arrangement. You could fit 12 people around a 7" square table. To seat more people than that, you would need a rectangular table.

When deciding on an ideal table size, sometimes less is more in spacious rooms. With table dimensions accounted for, you may find that an 8 seater table size fits better in your dining room than a 12 seater. Your choice should be proportional to the shape of the room but also the amount you want to seat when deciding between table shapes. Placing a sheet on the ground or creating an outline with a masking table can help you visualize the space your table will take. For example, you should be able to fit a rectangle table size of 36–42 inches wide and up to 60–70 inches long in a room measuring 10 x 12 feet. You can also fit square or round table size of around 48 inches in diameter instead, leaving you with more space to fit additional furniture along the wall. If you are trying to match a table with a rug, the rug should minimally 30" longer than the table size in areas where chairs are placed.
